B2SB - Back 2 School Bash

Sorry it has taken me so long to write about the Back 2 School Bash. I have been drug through a fire while walking in a valley. I wish that life was just mountaintop, mountaintop, mountaintop, but the reality is that life has its ups and downs. Thankfully, B2SB was one of those ups – a mountaintop!

Thanks to all our volunteers, chefs, donors, and attendees for making our first B2SB a fun filled event. Also, a huge thank you to CrossPointe Church in Bothell for supporting us this summer and hosting this end of summer event. Special thanks to God for the incredible weather. Some of the youth even said, “I think we might have prayed too hard for good weather,” as the temperatures were in the 80s.

The youth skated for about an hour and a half before lunch was served. We had more food than we needed thanks to generous donations by friends and family.

After lunch, the raffle and silent auction ended. Great prizes were handed out to the winners. Thanks to our raffle and auction item donors: Bev Spore, Karen Bennett, Bob & Micki Shulkind, Sparta’s Pizza in Bothell, Play it Again Sports in Woodinville, Taco Time Corporate Office, Starbucks, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, C28.com, and Jubilee Skate Shop. Please show your support by supporting these local establishments.

After lunch, Bad Timing took the stage. Christian and Dru did a great job despite being short a couple of band members. We’re looking forward to having them play for us again.

Next on the docket was A Day For Dying. Recommended to me by my skate ministry friend, JD, A Day For Dying willingly traveled from Spokane Saturday morning to play for our outreach. These guys are fantastic. Not only did they come free of charge, but they left Spokane at 6am in order to make sure they got here on time, hung out for hours waiting to play, and kept an awesome attitude the entire time. I highly recommend booking this band if you get a chance to do so. Their message is clear – Christ is the answer!

All in all, the day was a success. We had about 60 people in total between skaters, parents, volunteers and band members. We raised $534 dollars through the raffle, silent auction, miscellaneous donations and entry fees. Since almost everything was donated, our total “take home” was $435.

Pictures are being posted on Shutterfly at www.madskates.shutterfly.com. Some photos taken by Julie King have already been posted there. Please stop by shutterfly and enjoy the view. J

Parents - Time Change

Parents,

Some discussion has begun about starting Skate Night a little earlier on Monday nights to help accommodate the school year, get the youth home earlier, etc. Our start time was originally based on my work schedule with 6:30 being the earliest I could get home and get set up for skate. Since I will be done with that job at the end of this month, we are discussing options for changing the schedule starting in October.

Currently, we start at 6:30pm and end at 9:00pm.

Our other options are to run it...
from 5:30pm - 8:00pm
or
6:00pm - 8:30pm.

Please send me an email to let me know if you have a preference or opinion on this. Definitely send me an email if changing the time will make it so you cannot get your skater to our event anymore.

Thank you,
Brett Elizabeth Spore

Skate Night - Personal Study - Underground Vietnam

This assignment is for anyone who joined us this summer for the Underground Reality Vietnam DVD series.

Please write a short letter to one of the following:
1 - The Christians in Vietnam
2 - Voice of the Martyrs - the US group that sent the teenagers
3 - One of the teenagers: Bethany, Wes, Bryant, Brad, Daniel "DJ", Jon, Shannon, or Jon.

There are 2-5 points available. You will not be "graded" on your spelling or punctuation. What I want to see is your heart. What do you really feel about this experience, the people, the situation, the risk, etc?

Turn in your letter next Monday night at Skate Night.

Thanks and see you all at B2SB this Saturday at CrossPointe Church!
