Yesterday's Bible Session Notes - 1/27/14

Samson 1-27-14

We’ve been studying the life of Samson. Who can tell me something they remember about this story so far?

Turn to Judges 14:1.

Judges 14:1-3 (Student read.)

*Samson was an Israelite.  He was to be a judge and a Nazirite.

Question: Who can tell me who was ruling the Israelites during this time? (Philistines)

Question: So were the Philistines considered friends or enemies of the Israelites? (Enemy)

Question: Who was supposed to begin the freeing of the Israelites from the Philistines? (Samson)

Question: So why on earth would he want to marry a Philistine!?!?! (Student response)

Judges 14:4 (student read)

*Ah ha!  God has a plan!

Judges 14:5-6 (student read.)

*He tore up a lion and did not tell his parents! How did they miss this?

Question: whose power tore up the lion? (Samson/God)

Judges 14:7 (Student read.)

*Samson headed on into town, met the girl, and he liked her.

Judges 13:8-9 (student read.)

*He ate honey from inside the lion and shared it with his parents.  Again he does not tell his parents

Question: Why? (Student response)

Judges 14:10-11 (student read.)

*The family goes to meet the gal and Samson begins a 7 day bachelor party with 30 guys he just met.

Judges 14:12-13 (student read.)

Question: Who here likes riddles?

*This riddle came with a prize if the guys got it right, but it also came with a cost if they got it wrong.

Question: How many days did they have to solve the riddle? (7)

Judges 14:14 (student read.)

*Ah the riddle:

Question: How many days went by without an answer? (3)

Judges 14:15 (student read.)

*The men threatened Samson’s wife saying they will destroy her family to try to get the answer out of her.

Judges 14:16 (student read.)

*Samson’s wife begs him for an answer but Samson won’t give it to her.

Question: Is Samson’s wife honest with Samson? (

Question: She says he doesn’t love her, but what is the real reason she wants the answer? (To protect her family)

Judges 14:17 (student read.)

Question: Samson gives in and tells her the answer and then what does she do? (Tells the men)

Question: How is Samson’s wife similar or different from Samson’s mother? (Student response)

Judges 14:18 (student read.)

*The men solve the riddle and Samson knows they cheated.

Judges 14:19 (student read.)

*Samson becomes immensely strong, kills 30 men, takes their clothing and pays the men who solved the riddle.

Judges 14:20 (student read.)

*Because Samson stormed off and killed those 30 men in order to pay the riddle payment, Samson’s wife was given to another man.  More on that next week.

Interesting Points:

1 – Samson’s power and strength always come when the Spirit of God comes on him.  He is not super strong on his own.

2 – A little secrecy goes a long way.  Open communication between Samson and his parents as well as between Samson and his wife would have saved a lot of headaches and a lot of lives.

3 – Make good choices in your friends and eventually who you are dating and who you marry.  Find someone like Samson’s mother who last week helped her husband see reality and stopped him from panicking unlike Samson’s wife who led him deceptively into a trap with the 30 men.

Last Week's Bible Session Notes - 1/20/14

Samson
Last week we began our study of?  Samson.

Known for being one of the strongest men in the Bible, he was also a judge.

What do you think of when I say “judge?”

When we think of judges today, we think of people of authority who sit in a place of judgment determining whether or not someone committed a crime, hear and decide cases in a court of law, who has to pay for damage, and so on.  In the Old Testament times a judge was an administrative head of Israel in the period of time between the death of Joshua and the time when Saul becomes king.  Samson didn’t so much sit in a seat of judgment but like many judges of his time, he was meant to bring about the breaking free of Israel away from the Philistines.

Turn to Judges 13:15 where we will continue reading about Samson’s birth.

Judges 13:15-16 (Student read.)

*Manoah offers the angel a meal.  At this point, Manoah believes the angel is just a man – a prophet or messenger from God.

Question: What does the angel tell Manoah to do with the goat? (make an offering to God)

Judges 13:17-18 (student read)

*Manoah still thinks this is just a man, so he asks his name and wants to give him honor when his “prophecy” or “message” comes to pass.

*The angel of the Lord says his name is beyond understanding.  His name is wonderful.  God isn’t exactly describable in human terms.  So the angel says, you wouldn’t understand.

Judges 13:19-21 (student read.)

*Manoah offers the goat to God, and the angel of the Lord ascends in the flame.  This is when Manoah finally realizes this wasn’t just a prophet passing through – this was God!

Judges 13:22 (Student read.)

Question: What did Manoah believe would happen because they saw God? They would die

Judges 13:23 (student read.)

*Manoah’s wife is the voice of reason.

Question: In your own words, what did she say to Manoah?

Question: When you are hitting the panic button in life, who is in your life to be the voice of reason, keeping you calm?

Judges 13:24-25 (student read.)

*Samson is born and God blesses him.

Conclusions:

God fulfilled his promise to Manoah and his wife.  Samson was born as God said it would happen.

Sometimes we need someone to be our voice of reason, to keep our head in the game and our eyes focused on Christ.

Question: What was the consequence?  40 of Philistine rule.

Judges 13:2-7

Question: Does anyone know some of the rules for a Nazarite?

*Set apart to God – formal oath/vow

*No wine or fermented liquor, no vinegar, no grapes

*No shaving or cutting of hair

*No contact with a dead body

Number 6:1-8 – The Nazarite Vow

Judges 13:8

*I love how this dad immediately recognizes the magnitude of the situation and asks God for help.

Judges 13:9-14

*God hears you.

Judges 13:13

Question: Did the angel of the Lord answer Manoah’s question? NO

Question: Why do you think that is? Student answers.

Bible Session 1-6-14

1/6/14

Strength – Courage – Perseverance

It’s a New Year, and typically people start a New Year by making New Year’s Resolutions.

What are some New Year’s Resolutions you have heard people make this year?

Although many people will focus on things like getting out of debt, better relationships, losing weight, graduating from school and the things you spoke about, I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions.  Mostly because so many times we fail at keeping them.

I do believe in taking this moment in time as an opportunity to look back on the last year and reflect on what went right and what went wrong.  I like to look at where I can improve this year, what worked well, and what I’d like to do differently.  Maybe 2013 went really well for you or maybe you fell flat on your face a lot.  Maybe you set some goals and did a great job of reaching them or maybe you didn’t. Starting a new year gives us an opportunity to look at last year and ask, “What can I do differently?”

This year, whatever your goals may be, I challenge you to live like a champion.  I challenge you to live the best life you can.  I challenge you to be who God designed you to be: an athlete, an artist, a student, a singer, a writer, a friend, a sister, a brother, a teacher, a skater.  I challenge you to pursue excellence in what you do and in who you are.

In order to live this year like you have never lived before, you are going to need three things…

STRENGTH – COURAGE – PERSERVANCE.

Tonight we are going to look at strength and courage.

Joshua has just been put in charge of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land – Canaan.  It is a land flowing with milk and honey – a rich land!  It is also inhabited by giants.  No lie!

Let’s take a look:

Prior to Joshua taking over, Moses sends some scouts into Canaan to check out the land before heading into it.

Numbers 13:27-28 they gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.

But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.

But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”

And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.

We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Even though Caleb told the people that they should go into Canaan and take the land, they did not listen and acted in fear.  Because of this, they were left to wander in the desert for 40 years.  Eventually, Moses dies and Joshua is put in charge of leading the Israelites into Canaan.  Knowing what was there – giant people and massively fortified cities - God tells Joshua to go.

Turn to Joshua 1:1-9

After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide:

“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites.

I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.

Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

No matter what giants you face this year, God is with you!  Be strong and courageous!
