Last Week's Bible Session - 7/1/13 - Jesus as Salvager

Jesus As Salvager

*Very Loosely Adapted from Creative Bible Lessons on the Life of Christ

By Brett Spore 7-1-13

Define Salvage:

the act of saving a ship or its cargo from perils of the seas.

the property saved.

the act of saving anything from fire, danger, etc.

the property saved from danger.

Participation:

Concept: The results of destruction

Task: Show a broken object: torn paper cup, pop can ripped in half, leg of a chair, etc.

Questions:

1.     Describe the destroyed item.

2.     What was the item’s purpose?

3.     Is this item presently functional for its original purpose?

4.     Can it ever be completely restored for its original purpose? (If Yes – Skip to #6)

5.     Is there anything that can be salvaged from this item in its present condition?

6.     What would it take to restore this item to new?

Message:

In John 4:1-42 – We read about the Samaritan woman who meets Jesus at the well.  Her life was a train wreck, but Jesus offered her a new life through him.

Vs. 42 says: They (the people of her town) said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

The townspeople who would have thought this woman to be the scum of the earth, just said they believed “because of what you said.”  They would never have believed what she said before she met Christ, but because of his transforming power in her life, he “salvaged” her life and made her a new person, they believed her.

Bible Drill: 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

By accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior, you become a new creation!  All the wrongs of the past are cleaned up by God, you are forgiven for all those mistakes, and Jesus “salvages” you and creates you new again!

Jesus is in the salvage business, and only He can

1.     Clean our dirty lives and restore us from true brokenness

2.     Make something significant out of what is insignificant

3.     Change our lives

Application:

Think about your life right now and see if there is a place of brokenness.  Think about what you’d like for God to fix in your life.  Write it down on this piece of paper, and put the paper in your pocket or sock or wherever you are going to find it tonight before going to bed.  As you go to bed, take out the piece of paper and pray to God asking Him to salvage that area of your life - to save you and repair you and heal you and make you new.
